About Urugua-í Provincial Park

Urugua-í Provincial Park, located in the Misiones province of Argentina, preserves one of the largest remaining tracts of Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlántica) in South America. Established in 1990, the park spans a mosaic of rugged terrain including subtropical rainforest, waterfalls, and river valleys, offering a vital refuge for numerous rare and endemic species. The 84,000+ hectares of protected land serve as an ecological corridor connecting other conservation areas, enhancing biodiversity conservation. The park is crossed by the Urugua-í River, from which it takes its name, providing fresh water ecosystems and scenic cascades such as the Urugua-í waterfalls. Visitors are drawn to the park for hiking through trails that meander alongside dense vegetation, birdwatching opportunities with species like the jaguar, tapir, and various parrots, and peaceful wildlife observation. The park's relatively remote location means it receives fewer tourists compared to more famous sites like nearby Iguazú National Park, affording a more solitary encounter with pristine forest. Educational programs and guided eco-tours promote respect for the fragile ecosystem, while small observation towers and lookout points highlight panoramic views of the forest canopy and river valleys. Urugua-í Provincial Park is an important bastion for the protection of the Atlantic Forest biome, reflecting strong conservation efforts amid pressures from agriculture and logging. Adventurous visitors find it a rewarding destination for nature immersion, spotting elusive mammals, and experiencing the sounds and sights of one of the most biologically rich temperate rainforests in the world.
